• GLOSSARY OF TERMS


  • TGM Designs created this glossary of web design and related terminology to help our clients to know and understand what services we provide. The terms cited are used regularly throughout Web development and design documentation. If you are starting a new website project then you will find these terms very helpful. This glossary's intention is to be relevant and beneficial to your understanding rather than be comprehensive.

     

    B2B

    Acronym for Business To(2) Business (B2B).

    B2C

    Acronym for Business To(2) Consumer (B2C).

    BACKDOOR

    A common way for Hackers to enter a computer system after other security holes have been shut off.

    BANDWIDTH

    This is the amount of data capacity that a network has to offer. An example: a 56k modem connection has a "bandwidth" of 56,000 bits per second. It is also the amount of traffic a website is allowed monthly.

    BANNED WEBSITE

    A website that has been removed from the search engine's index because the website has violated the search engines guidelines, illegally phishing for information or spamming.

    BANNER

    Most commonly a rectangle, it is a graphic advertisement that is displayed on a webpage, more commonly known as a Web Ad. They can be a static image, an animated gif, or Flash. Learn More...

    BITMAP IMAGE (BMP)

    A graphic image with a specific arrangement of dots or pixels that are stored to make up the image. Bitmap images are rasterized images with common types being GIF, JPEG, TIFF, BMP and PNG.

    BLIND TRAFFIC

    Mostly unintentional traffic brought to the site through misleading graphic banners, spam or viruses.

    BLOG

    Blog is short for the term "web blog". A blog is most generaly considered an online diary for personal or professional use made up of updates for the visitor.

    BLOGGER

    The author of the "web blog".

    BOOKMARK

    Web browsers such as Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox use this feature to allow you to save the URL of a website to access easily later. Most commonly known as "Favorites".

    BOT

    Short for Robot, a Bot is a file that has a short piece of programming that performs a specfic function. Most commonly used to look around the Internet for information.

    BROADBAND

    A network with high bandwidth, usually greater that 256bps.

    BROWSE

    A term used to describe a user's movement over the Internet using a browser.

    BROWSER

    A software program used to navigate the Internet through interpreting hypertext and hyperlinks. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefoz, Opera, and Safari are a few to name. Each browser has their own set of web standards therefore unless otherwise developed, a webpage will look slightly different in each.

    BROWSER STYLE SHEET

    The default style that is defined within a Browser. If a designer does that declare any rules (most commonly known as Cascading Style Sheets, or CSS) the browser will default back to this.
