TGM Designs created this glossary of web design and related terminology to help our clients to know and understand what services we provide. The terms cited are used regularly throughout Web development and design documentation. If you are starting a new website project then you will find these terms very helpful. This glossary's intention is to be relevant and beneficial to your understanding rather than be comprehensive.
IC3Acronym for Internet Crime Complaint Center. The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) was established as a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) to serve as a means to receive Internet related criminal complaints and to further research, develop, and refer the criminal complaints to federal, state, local, or international law enforcement and/or regulatory agencies for any investigation they deem to be appropriate. The IC3 was intended, and continues to emphasize, serving the broader law enforcement community to include federal, as well as state, local, and international agencies, which are combating Internet crime and, in many cases, participating in Cyber Crime Task Forces. ICANNAcronym for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, formed in October 1998 it is a non-profit corporation with responsibility for management of the Internet domain name system. ICANN is comprised of a broad coalition of the Internet's business, technical, and academic communities both in the US and worldwide. IEAcronym for Internet Explorer (IE). A popular browser delveloped by Microsoft. IMAGEA photograph in a digital format. IMAGE MAPA graphic or image on a webpage that is used for navigation that performs different actions depending where the user clicks on it. IMPRESSIONThe delivery of a company logo, advertisement, banner ad or targeted graphic to a user through a webpage. INCLUSIVE DESIGNDeveloping systems or websites to serve the broadest amount of users possible over different operating systems, browsers and screen resolutions. Most call for an adaptable interface to be built very early in the design process. INDEXA collection of information that a serach engine has that users can search using keywords and phrases. An index can also be the main page of any website. INLINE STYLE SHEETWhen Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is placed within the HTML document instead of in a seperate file. When placed in the HTML document, it can be found in the HEAD tags. INTRANETA private network of computers that are inside a company or organization that use the same kind of software and rules of the Internet but is only used to transfer internal information. INTERNETThe collection of interconnected networks connected using the TCP/IP protocol that store and send out information. When the user's computer is connected to the Internet it has established a line that will reach any accessable page on any given server. The Internet originated from what used to be known as the ARPANet created in the 1960s and 1970s. INTERNET MARKETINGTechniques and strategies that are applied to the Internet to support the overall marketing objective of a company. This includes driving traffic to the website through banner ads, impressions, key words, meta tags, newsgroups, mailing lists, e-mails and other interactive features. InterstitialA banner that appears in a separate browser window while you wait for a Web page to load. Interstitials are in various sizes, and are more likely to contain large graphics, streaming presentations, and special features not found in conventional banners. IP ADDRESSA unqiue numerical series assigned to every computer that are linked to the Internet allowing individual computers to talk others. Most ISPs will assign an IP address for the duration of your session. ISPAcronym for Internet Service Provider (ISP). Companies that provide Internet access to individuals and companies. |
