• GLOSSARY OF TERMS


  • TGM Designs created this glossary of web design and related terminology to help our clients to know and understand what services we provide. The terms cited are used regularly throughout Web development and design documentation. If you are starting a new website project then you will find these terms very helpful. This glossary's intention is to be relevant and beneficial to your understanding rather than be comprehensive.

     

    K

    Acronym for Kilobyte (K). Approximately 1,024 bytes.

    KBPS

    Acronym for Kilobytes Per Second (KBPS). A measure of bandwith useage.

    KEI

    Acronym for Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI). KEI is the measure of the effectiveness of a keyword through search frequency and competition of a keyword through a search engine for directory.

    KERNING

    Horiztontal space between letters in a word.

    Key

    A mathematical value that determines the outcome of the encryption and decryption functions.

    KEYWORD

    A word or phrase that a user will search a search engine or directory with to find relevant information associtated with that keyword or phrase.

    KEYWORD ANALYSIS

    Checking to see that the keywords your visitors are using or will be using when searching for your site through a search engine.

    Keyword Density

    The measurement of how frequently any given keyword appears within a web page. Too high a density can result in a web page being classified as spam while too low a density will cause a page to not be indexed as well for the given keyword.

    KEYWORD SEARCHING

    Using a word or phrase to search for anything through a search engine.

    KEYWORD STUFFING

    Keyword stuffing is optimizing web pages for search engines instead of visitors. Most of these sites look and read out of context sinch they are stuffed with certain keywords in the webpage to boost ranking. Though not illegal with search engines, this practise is considered spamming and should be avoided at all times.

    KEYWORD PROMINENCE

    How high a keyword is found on a page through search engines. The higher the keyword, the more weight it is given by the search engine.

    KEYWORD WEIGHT

    The number of times a keyword appears in a page as a percentage of all the other words on the webpage. The higher the weight of a keyword, the higher the webpage will be in search engine results. However, repeating the keyword too many times in order to increase it's weight is called Keyword Stuffing and should be avoiding at all times.

    KLUDGE

    A slang term used in the web design field for an awkard but atleast temporariliy effective solution to a design problem.
