• GLOSSARY OF TERMS


  • TGM Designs created this glossary of web design and related terminology to help our clients to know and understand what services we provide. The terms cited are used regularly throughout Web development and design documentation. If you are starting a new website project then you will find these terms very helpful. This glossary's intention is to be relevant and beneficial to your understanding rather than be comprehensive.

     

    MACINTOSH

    Macintosh is a popular computer made by Apple Computers in 1984, also known as a Mac computer.

    MAILING LISTS

    An electronic group discussion which has a speific topic or an interest that is carried out with e-mail messages. All subscribers to this mailing list recieve all copies of all the messages sent to that list.

    MANUAL SUBMISSION

    Submitting websites or web pages to seach engines and directories for inclusion in their databases using specific guidelines unique to each.

    MARGIN

    A property in CSS that specifies how much space will be inserted between elements.

    MB

    Acronym for Megabyte (MB). Approximately one million bytes.

    Merchant Account

    An online bank account required by a store to receive payments through electronic mediums like credit cards. It can be considered as a virtual bank account that receives electronic money.

    Merchant Account Provider

    A bank or other institution that provides accounts to merchants wishing to process online credit card transactions.

    META TAGS

    Appearing at the top of an HTML document, the most valuable meta tags are the "description" and "keywords". Meta tags contain information about the content of the webpage and/or website. Meta tags are used to help with search engine ranking.

    MIDI

    Acronym for Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI). A type of audio file format. The standard protocol for communication between computers and musical instruments.

    MIRROR

    Maintaining an exact copy or image of something.

    MOBLOG

    Moblog is short for mobile blogging. It is posting on a blog while using a PDA, phone, camera, or anything as long as you are not sitting in front of your computer.

    MODEM

    A piece of hardwear equipment to connect a computer to the Internet via the telephone network with a telephone line.

    MODERATOR

    A single person or a small group of people who review submissions of something before it's posted for the public. Most often used in messaging boards, newsgroup and mailing lists.

    MOSAIC

    The first commonly available type of web browser. It was released in 1993 and started one of the biggest browser wars of Internet history.

    MOUSE OVER

    Javacript element that triggers and event or change of an item (usually a graphic change such as making an image appear or changing the color of a hyperlink) in a webpage when a mouse cursor is passed over it.

    MP3

    An audio file format that compresses audio files relatively small, most often see associated with music files.

    MPEG

    Acronym for Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). A video file format mostly associated with the Internet.

    MS-DOS

    A general disk based computer operating system originally developed by Microsoft for IBM computers then used for a version of Windows machines.

    MULTIMEDIA

    In web terms: presentations combining text with pictures, video and sound.

    MYSQL

    An open source relational database management system that uses Structured Query Language (SQL).
