• GLOSSARY OF TERMS

  • TGM Designs created this glossary of web design and related terminology to help our clients to know and understand what services we provide. The terms cited are used regularly throughout Web development and design documentation. If you are starting a new website project then you will find these terms very helpful. This glossary's intention is to be relevant and beneficial to your understanding rather than be comprehensive.

    T1 / T3

These are high-speed network connections. A T1 carries 1.54 megabits of data per second, and a T3 carries 45 megabits per second.

    Table

Used to organize web content into rows and columns. Each cell can contain text, images, or both.

    Tags

The name given to any element of an HTML document that is used as instructions to format the document. For example, tags can be used to make certain text show up bold or underlined, and are used to create a link between two HTML documents.

    TCP/IP

Acronym for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. This is the name used to define the complete set of protocols that moves data across the Internet.

    Telnet

An Internet protocol that let you connect your PC as a remote workstation to a host computer anywhere in the world and to use that computer as if you were logged on locally. You often have the ability to use all of the software and capability on the host computer, even if it's a huge mainframe.

    Template

A template is a page that serves as a pattern for others like itself. Adobe Dreamweaver templates take the concept of the template further, adding a measure of power and ease: The pages from the template can be updated automatically, all at once, just by updating the template itself. Therefore, an Adobe Dreamweaver template is an HTML page but a special type of HTML page. Special markup inserted by Adobe Dreamweaver makes it possible for the template and its child pages (the HTML pages made from the parent template) to be connected in such a way that an update to the template updates all child pages.

    Text Only Browser

A browser that does not show images. It does not have images turned off; rather it just doesn't display them. A good example of this type of browser is Lynx.

    Third-Party Authentication

An authentication method that requires an impartial third party to validate the identity of two computers or two users.

    Thread

A series of messages or "posts" related to the same topic in a discussion group, newsgroup or online forum, such as an original post and related follow-ups.

    Thumbnail

A thumbnail image is a small version of an image that is used to give the viewer an idea of what the full-sized imaged is like. Typically, clicking on the thumbnail image will cause the full-sized image to download.

    Tif / Tiff

A common way to store bit-mapped graphics images on both PC's and Macintosh computers. TIFF is a platform-independent format, which means a TIFF image created on a PC can be viewed on a Macintosh and vice versa. (Bit-map files, on the other hand, are a graphic format for the Windows environment.) The TIFF format was specifically designed for scanned images and is commonly used for that purpose. It also can be used in some applications to save images created on a computer.

    Title

An important Search Engine Optimization element, the title is used to describe the contents of a document. It is unique to the particular page, descriptive in nature or simply catchy and appealing, and rather short. Titles appear as links for users to click on or as link anchor text on documents. When used well it can help drive traffic to your website.

    Title Tag

The contents of the Title tag is generally displayed by the browser at the top of the browser window. The search engines use the Title tag to provide a link to the sites which match the query made by the user. Having keywords in the Title tag of a page can significantly increase the search engine ranking of the page for those keywords.

    TLD

    Acronym for Top Level Domain.

    Tomcat

Tomcat is an open-source implementation of Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages technologies developed under the Jakarta project at the Apache Software Foundation.

Apache, Sun and a variety of other companies and individuals are contributing to Tomcat. This implementation is available to any company or developer to be used in web servers, development tools, and to create dynamic, interactive web sites.

    Top Level Domain

The domain name extension that follows a domain name. For example:

    .com - Commerical Organizations
    .edu - Educational Organizations
    .gov - Government Organizations
    .mil - Military Organizations
    .net - Network Organizations
.org - Organzations that do not fit in any other other categories (Mostly non-profit)

    Tweening

The process of generating intermediate frames between two images to give the appearance that the first image evolves smoothly into the second image. Also, tweening is a key process in all types of animation, including computer animation. Sophisticated animation software enables you to identify specific objects in an image and define how they should move and change during the tweening process. Short for in-betweening.

    Traffic

This term is used to describe how many people visit your website. It can be measured in many different ways, such as hits and impressions.
